Turnkey EPC Delivery of a 20 MWh Battery Storage System
In Halle (Saale), we delivered a battery storage project entirely from a single source—from planning and civil infrastructure through to final grid connection. As part of a comprehensive EPC project, we implemented a 20 MWh storage system, with engineering, procurement, construction, and medium-voltage integration fully coordinated by our team. The turnkey system has been successfully prequalified, connected to the grid, and now provides primary control reserve, secondary reserve, and manual frequency restoration reserve.

Demand-oriented energy flexibilization
CCE Holding will use our storage system for energy flexibilization. The battery temporarily stores surplus electricity and feeds it back into the grid as required. This allows fluctuations to be balanced out and supply security to be significantly increased.
The initial situation: a storage project with special requirements
The project partner was looking for an economically and technically safe way to integrate a battery storage system into the regional power grid and implement a project that could be realized efficiently. The proximity to the substation in particular offered ideal conditions for this, as both costs and coordination effort could be reduced. At the same time, numerous environmental and approval requirements had to be taken into account, including noise protection, fire protection, soil conditions, nature conservation aspects and a suitable drainage concept. The challenge was therefore to combine all technical, regulatory and infrastructural requirements in a holistic project approach.

Planning, implementation and grid integration from a single source
In order to meet the technical and regulatory requirements of the project, we implemented the battery storage system as a complete EPC project. Based on the defined framework conditions, such as the proximity to the substation and the extensive environmental and approval requirements, we planned, procured and installed the 20 MWh storage system and successfully connected it to the power grid. Our scope of services included the engineering, delivery and installation of the battery modules, inverters, transformers and the medium-voltage switchgear as well as the responsible implementation of the necessary civil engineering work, foundations, access routes, fencing, lighting and video surveillance. We also integrated a noise barrier and a rainwater retention basin and combined all components into a uniform protection, control and communication architecture.
To ensure secure grid integration, we coordinated all interfaces with the grid operator, provided technical verification and carried out the grid protection test. We also provided a reliable IT and communication infrastructure, including redundant data paths, firewalls, VPN, telecontrol technology and the connection to the direct marketer. Following successful prequalification, the system now provides primary control power, secondary reserve and manual frequency restoration reserve and meets all of the customer's technical and regulatory requirements.
Functionality and benefits
Our stand-alone storage system enables:
- Efficiently store surplus electricity temporarily
- Feed electricity into the grid as required
- Provide primary control power, secondary reserve and mFRR
- Strengthen regional security of supply
"The implementation of this project shows that the energy transition can only succeed with strong partnerships. Together with INTILION, we were able to implement a solution that makes a real contribution to the region in a short space of time"
