Economic value for the municipal energy transition

With the battery storage system in Dinslaken, more than just additional grid flexibility is created. The system enables municipal utilities to actively participate in electricity markets and unlock new revenue streams. In this way, the project combines the economic use of storage technology with the strengthening of local energy infrastructure and essential public services.

The initial situation

Stadtwerke Dinslaken was looking for a solution with which a battery storage system could not only contribute to stabilizing the electricity grid, but also be used economically. The aim was to install a storage system that actively participates in various electricity markets and generates additional income. As a fully municipal company, this revenue flows directly back into the city. They support both the expansion of the energy infrastructure and important public services.

Implementation of the project

A battery storage system with a capacity of around seven megawatt hours was installed as part of the project. The system is designed as a one-hour storage system and consists of a battery unit, inverter and transformer.

In addition, several system components were integrated:

• Application module
• battery unit
• Control unit

This system architecture enables flexible participation in various electricity markets and forms the technical basis for marketing the storage capacity.

The battery storage system fulfills several functions for Stadtwerke Dinslaken and the local energy system.
