Balancing energy and intraday trading for more stability in the electricity grid

The energy company Lechwerke (LEW) and the Bayernwerk subsidiary Bayernwerk Natur had our scalecube built in Meitingen. The large-scale storage facility provides balancing energy and is marketed on the intraday market. In this way, it makes a significant contribution to grid stability.

Increasing volatility in electricity generation

In the national energy system, more and more renewable generators are making electricity generation increasingly volatile. The importance of energy storage is, therefore, growing rapidly. In purely mathematical terms, one large battery is required per district in Bavaria, for example, to realise a climate-neutral energy system in the State of Bavaria. One such battery system is located in the district of Augsburg: the energy company Lechwerke (LEW) and the Bayernwerk subsidiary Bayernwerk Natur had our scalecube built in Meitingen. The large-scale storage facility provides balancing energy and is marketed on the intraday market. In this way, it makes a significant contribution to grid stability.

Storage market is booming

In particular, large-scale storage facilities in the megawatt range are becoming increasingly important, those that can generate revenue through marketing the energy intelligently. For this reason, Lechwerke and Bayernwerk have decided in favour of our large-scale storage system scalecube, which has a capacity of 7.4 megawatt hours. The system is
located on a Lechwerke site in Meitingen. The advantage of this location was that the storage system could be connected to the power grid via an existing
reserve grid connection from SGL Carbon. We used our EZA controller to connect to the grid and ensure grid conformity, taking into account the grid connection guidelines.

The market storage system is financed through revenue from marketing the energy. The Lechwerke trading team markets the energy from the storage facility in intraday trading and utilises price spreads by storing electricity when there is overproduction and withdrawing it when demand is high and prices are high. The system also supplies primary control power (PRL) – thus contributing to making the electricity grid stable. Our INTILION Application Unit (IAU) forms the interface to the marketer and has all the necessary applications and functions to fulfil the requirements of the PRL units.
