Large-scale energy storage for Switzerland: We are building a 65 MWh grid storage system
We’re excited to take an important step in Switzerland’s energy transition together with Primeo Energie. In Kappel, in the canton of Solothurn, one of the largest battery storage systems in Switzerland is currently under construction, with a total capacity of 65 megawatt-hours. The successful delivery of all system components marks a key milestone on the path to commissioning.

Storage system makes electricity more flexible
Primeo Energie will use our storage system to provide energy flexibility. The battery stores surplus electricity from renewable sources and feeds it back into the grid as needed. In this way, fluctuations can be balanced out and supply security can be significantly increased.
End-to-end logistics – more than just hardware
The success of the project was not only determined by the delivery of the battery containers, but also by the overall logistical coordination. INTILION managed the entire transport chain from China to Switzerland – including shipping, customs clearance, and interim storage.
Instead of relying on a complex road transport solution, INTILION chose an alternative approach: all 16 containers were transported together by inland vessel along the Rhine, from Rotterdam to Birsfelden. This route was more efficient, safer, and eliminated the need for complex permits for heavy transports.
"Especially in international projects involving critical infrastructure, a secure, clean, and punctual supply chain is essential. This project has shown that we can fully manage even complex transports with sensitive components." - Philipp Knaup (INTILION)

Delivery of a large battery storage unit by truck
To optimally support the construction progress, INTILION organized a lithium-capable interim storage facility with the highest safety standards near the project site. This made it possible to adapt deliveries flexibly to the construction phases. In addition to the battery modules, transformers, inverters, control systems, and cabling materials were also stored there.
"With the battery storage system in Kappel, we are making a targeted investment in the security of supply and flexibility of our energy system. Smooth delivery of the system components is a key success factor for the realization of a project of this size. Equally important is the close, collaborative partnership between all project participants, as this forms the basis for the joint success of the project ." - Pablo Frezzi, Project Manager Substations at Primeo Energie

Our role in the Swiss energy transition
With this large-scale storage system, we are making an important contribution to implementing Switzerland’s Energy Strategy 2050. The country is pursuing the goal of transitioning its energy supply entirely to renewable sources by 2050.
"Large-scale battery storage systems will play an increasingly important role in stabilizing the power grid in the future." - Frederik Süllwald, Head of Global Sales & Key Account Management, INTILION
Functionality and benefits
Our stand-alone storage system enables:
- Efficiently store surplus electricity temporarily
- Feed electricity into the grid as required
- Compensate for weather-related fluctuations in renewable electricity production
- Increase the security of supply in Switzerland
"The large-scale system will be used to compensate for weather-related fluctuations in the area’s rapidly growing renewable electricity production. It will, therefore, help secure electricity supply and demonstrates Primeo Energie's commitment to providing effective solutions for a successful energy transformation"
