When solar power requires flexibility

With the expansion of photovoltaic systems, the demand for technologies that make renewable energy flexibly usable is also increasing. large-scale battery storage systems enable electricity to be shifted in time and at the same time provide essential ancillary services for a stable power grid.

Initial situation

Mando GmbH & Co. KG is one of the companies actively driving the expansion of renewable energy. Large photovoltaic systems have already been installed at several sites in North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt. However, the increasing feed-in of solar power leads to greater fluctuations in the power grid. In order to use the generated energy efficiently and at the same time provide frequency containment reserve for stabilizing grid frequency, the installation of several large-scale battery storage systems was planned.

Implementation of the project

For the project sites, INTILION developed a customized storage solution. A total of eight identical battery storage systems were installed, together achieving a total capacity of just under 30 megawatt-hours. The engineering team at INTILION designed the systems in line with the requirements of the sites and the existing photovoltaic installations. The delivery and installation of the components—including battery systems, transformers, and inverters—were planned and executed by the project team. Commissioning was then carried out by the company’s own installation team, enabling the storage systems to be fully integrated into the existing energy infrastructure.

Functionality and benefits

The large-scale battery storage systems perform several key functions within the energy system.

Provision of Frequency Containment Reserve

The systems respond within a very short time to frequency deviations in the power grid and thereby contribute to stabilizing grid frequency.

More efficient use of renewable energies

Surplus solar power can be stored and fed back into the grid when needed.

Flexibility for future energy markets

In addition to grid stabilization, the storage systems are also designed for future applications in electricity trading.

Contribution to a stable energy supply

With the installation of large-scale battery storage systems, a high-performance infrastructure is created that better integrates renewable energy into the energy system. At the same time, the systems make an important contribution to stabilizing the power grid. The project demonstrates how modern storage technologies can be combined with photovoltaic systems to drive the energy transition forward and ensure a reliable energy supply.
