The large-scale battery storage facility in Feuchtwangen will create an efficient infrastructure for a modern and sustainable energy supply. The facility will enable the flexible use of locally generated renewable electricity, stabilize the power grid and further promote the integration of renewable energies. The town and Stadtwerke Feuchtwangen are thus creating an important basis for a secure and sustainable local energy supply.
Initial situation:
The expansion of renewable energy is increasingly presenting cities and municipal utilities with new challenges. Electricity from photovoltaics and wind power is not always available when it is needed. At the same time, high feed-in from renewable sources can lead to temporary surpluses in the grid.
The city of Feuchtwangen and Stadtwerke Feuchtwangen are pursuing the goal of making the local energy supply more sustainable, flexible, and independent in the long term. To improve the integration of renewable energy while ensuring grid stability, the use of a high-performance large-scale battery storage system was decided.
Project implementation
The project was implemented jointly with Siemens as project lead. INTILION was responsible for the delivery and commissioning of the large-scale battery storage system.
The system was built on the Schleifmühle site and completed and connected to the grid within approximately four months. With an output of 10 megawatts and a capacity of 20 megawatt-hours, the battery storage system is one of the central flexibility components in the local energy system. INTILION contributed its technical expertise in industrial energy storage solutions. Services included system design, integration of the storage technology into the existing infrastructure, and successful commissioning.
Functionality of the Large-Scale Battery Storage System
The large-scale battery storage system performs several key functions within the local energy infrastructure. It serves as a short-term buffer for electricity from renewable energy sources in the region. Surplus energy can be stored and fed back into the grid at a later time. This helps balance fluctuations in power generation and enables better integration of renewable energy into the energy system.
