Stadtwerke: Primary and secondary control power increased retroactively

INTILION increases control power for pioneer hybrid storage project of Stadtwerke Bielefeld

Paderborn, 23 August 2022. Energy storage solutions expert INTILION has again prequalified a megawatt hybrid storage unit installed at Stadtwerke Bielefeld for balancing power. The unit can not only temporarily store surplus energy, but also use this energy to heat up the district heating water. By adjusting the control parameters in the INTILION control units, the storage expert has now succeeded in balancing the power at the grid connection point more quickly, thereby meeting the increasing requirements of the transmission system operators and subsequently increasing the primary and secondary control power (PRL and SRL).

Unique project

Since April 2021, Stadtwerke Bielefeld has been marketing the energy from the hybrid storage facility in the PRL market of the transmission system operator Tennet. “Our hybrid storage system was already unique with 7.32 megawatts and can now provide even more power,” says a delighted Klaus Danwerth, head of the Re-newable Energies and Distributed Generation business unit at Stadtwerke Bielefeld. The system consists of a battery storage unit with around 22,000 lithium-ion cells interconnected to form battery modules and twelve resistance heaters that generate heat for the district heating grid. They each contain eight heating elements with a capacity of 80 kilowatts.

“With the adapted regulation, we succeeded in increasing the output by about 180 kilowatts,” says a pleased Christoph Bürger, applications engineer at INTILION. For the prequalification, the company completed the required operational drive (the so-called “double hump curve”) and successfully regulated the desired 7.5 megawatts within 30 seconds and kept this constant throughout the entire output phase. “With the operation-al run, we met the conditions for positive SRL and positive PRL. The negative PRL did not need to be prequalified again, as we were already able to successfully complete this with 7.5 megawatts during the first prequalification in November 2020,” explains Bürger.

Security of supply without grid expansion

He adds, “After evaluation of the measurement data in the transient and stationary areas of the responsible transmission system operator, the storage facility can be marketed on the control market with 7.5 megawatts for PRL and SRL. The special feature of this renewed prequalification is that the storage capacity of the bat-tery is about 7.6 megawatt hours and in combination with the E-heaters a marketable capacity of 7.5 mega-watts is unique. Security of supply without grid expansion can succeed with flexible storage – we have shown that through this project.”
