INTILION is building a 100 MWh battery storage facility in Mainz and Wiesbaden

Paderborn/Mainz/Wiesbaden. Kraftwerke Mainz-Wiesbaden AG (KMW) and ESWE BioEnergie GmbH are working with INTILION GmbH to implement two large-scale battery storage projects with a combined capacity of 100 MWh in Germany’s Rhine-Main region. High-performance energy storage solutions are being developed at the Ingelheimer Aue in Mainz and in Wiesbaden, which will help stabilize the power grid and inte-grate renewable energy in the future. 

KMW, which is jointly owned in equal shares by Mainzer Stadtwerke AG and ESWE Versorgungs AG, has commissioned INTILION to supply and implement a large-scale battery storage system on the Ingelheimer Aue in Mainz. The Mainz project will have a nominal capacity of 67.7 MWh and a power output of 22.7 MW. At the same time, INTILION is implementing a further battery storage system for ESWE BioEnergie GmbH in Wiesbaden, with a nominal capacity of 33.8 MWh and a power output of 11.3 MW. The INTILION | scalecube battery storage systems will be implemented as modular solutions. A total of 18 battery containers will be deployed, each with a capacity of 5.6 MWh.

As the system integrator for both projects, INTILION will assume overall responsibility for the planning and implementation of the battery storage facilities and will support their long-term operation through comprehensive service and monitoring solutions. Its responsibilities include system design, the selection and optimal configuration of all key components, and the overall coordination of project implementation. On this basis, INTILION will be responsible for integrating the battery systems, installing the electrical components, conducting trial operations, and carrying out the final system tests through to successful commissioning. INTILION will also organise and manage the entire project logistics process. A 15-year premium service package, including a 97 % availability guarantee, has been agreed to ensure the long-term operation of the facilities. Both projects commenced in January 2026. Commis-sioning is scheduled for February 2027 in Wiesbaden and March 2027 in Mainz. „Battery storage systems are a key component of an increasingly flexible energy system. In projects of this scale, success depends not only on the storage technology itself, but above all on comprehensive system integration and reliable execution. From technical planning and logistics through to commissioning, the result is a facility whose long-term operation is secured by a comprehensive service and monitoring concept delivering high levels of availability,“ says Carl Zoellner, CCO of INTILION.

Through these battery storage projects, KMW and ESWE are expanding their infrastructure by adding a strategic component for an increasingly flexible energy system. Facilities of this scale enable generation and consumption to be decoupled in terms of timing. “With this investment in battery storage technology, we are taking an important step towards a flexible and sustainable energy fu-ture. Large-scale battery storage systems enable us to integrate renewable energy into the electricity system in line with demand,” emphasises Oliver Malerius, Member of the Executive Board of KMW. Both facilities will be used for energy trading. In addition, they will be capable of providing Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) to stabilise grid frequency, as well as automatic Frequency Res-toration Reserve (aFRR) to further balance fluctuations in the electricity grid. “The expansion of renewable energy requires greater flexibility within the energy system. We create this flexibility through direct participation in wholesale and balancing energy markets,” adds Jan Schlauer, Managing Director of ESWE BioEnergie GmbH.
