INTILION, a leading provider of energy storage solutions, has reached an important milestone in Halle (Saale) together with the international energy transition company CCE: The battery storage system, with a storage capacity of 20 MWh and a power output of 10 MW, has been successfully connected to the electricity grid and has been in commercial operation since January 2026. The final EPC phase is currently in progress, comprising final acceptance and preparations for handover to the operations and maintenance teams.
The battery energy storage system (BESS) enables electricity to be stored and supplied when needed, providing enough energy for approximately 3,600 households. „As an official supporter of the energy transition in Halle, I am delighted that energy generated locally can now be used more flexibly,“ says Daniel Zwick, Head of the Climate Protection Team at the City of Halle (Saale). The system provides Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) and manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR). This enables the battery storage system to respond to frequency fluctuations in the electricity grid, thereby enhancing grid stability. As decentralised renewable energy generation increases the volatility of the electricity system, this function is becoming increasingly important. Battery storage systems help to maintain a reliable and secure balance between electricity generation and consumption. „Battery storage systems such as this one are already making a crucial contribution to the stability of our energy system and, consequently, to a secure electricity supply,” says Philipp Knaup, COO of INTILION GmbH.
The success of the project in Halle demonstrates that complex energy transition projects can only be delivered through seamless collaboration between all partners. CCE laid the foundations for its first battery storage project by strategically developing the project, planning and coordinating the technical, regulatory and financing aspects, and managing the necessary approval processes. On this basis, INTILION was able to take responsibility for implementing the battery storage system as the general contractor. The company was responsible for detailed planning, procurement, installation and the successful commissioning of the facility. INTILION also managed all ancillary works, including civil engineering, the construction of a noise protection barrier and a stormwater retention basin, as well as the supply of the medium-voltage power station.
A particular challenge involved coordinating the work and managing all interfaces with the local grid operator. For the first time, INTILION assumed full responsibility for this task. Connection to the German and European interconnected electricity grid requires compliance with numerous technical requirements. All of these requirements were successfully demonstrated before the facility received approval from the grid operator. “The implementation of this project demonstrates that the energy transition can only succeed through strong partnerships. Together with INTILION, we have delivered a solution that is already making a tangible contribution to the region within a short period of time,” explains Stefan Lindtner, Chief Growth Officer at CCE.
