Power grid of the future

INTILION storage system supplies Smart Grid LAB Hessen and Ingenieurbüro Pfeffer with power.

INTILION, the expert for battery storage solutions from Paderborn, Germany, has launched its outdoor storage system INTILION | scalebloc on the premises of Ingenieurbüro Pfeffer in Rödermark. The 68.5 kWh storage system now provides electricity to the company building and the Smart Grid LAB Hessen, which is being built there. In this research laboratory, the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and the Pfeffer engineering office, together with other project partners, intend to research an intelligent power grid (smart grid) under real-world conditions. INTILION’s storage system will also serve as a real element in a realistically simulated smart grid. “We are excited that our storage system is part of this innovative research project,” emphasizes Thomas Cloidt, Global Key Account Manager eMobility at INTILION.

Consumers are becoming prosumers

In the future power grid, decentralized energy supply is increasing. E-mobility and the heating sector are adding new loads, and solar power systems and home storage systems are turning consumers into so-called prosumers. “In our lab, we are recreating future grid situations and researching what problems arise in the low-voltage grid as well as how dynamic operating equipment can help to solve these challenges,” explains Sophia Pfeffer from Ingenieurbüro Pfeffer.

The laboratory is connected to the medium-voltage grid via an intelligent local substation. The research team can simulate vari-ous network situations via a test circuit in which individual prosumers are grouped into network sections. The prosumers do not exist in reality. Their consumer behavior has been described by the team of researchers in the form of power profiles. Their be-havior can be simulated with the help of inverter pairs. A distinction is made between different grid topologies and consumers, resulting in scenarios for rural, village, suburban and urban areas.

Intelligent integration of storage systems

The INTILION | scalebloc can be added as needed. Among other things, it will be used to investigate how battery storage sys-tems can be integrated into the power grid in the future to serve the grid. ” The objective, among other things, is to write algo-rithms that intelligently integrate battery storage units,” explains Sophia Pfeffer. As further real elements, a 30 kWp solar power system and two e4you fast charging columns with a total output of 60 and 90 kW complete the system.
